01 / Overview

Most visitors ride the Ngong Ping 360 cable car from Tung Chung, about 25 minutes over the hills and water, or take bus 23, then climb 268 steps to the statue's base for wide views over Lantau. Below, Po Lin Monastery has colourful halls and serves vegetarian meals. Allow half a day including the journey. Go early on a weekday, as cable car queues are long at weekends, and check for cable car maintenance closures before you set off. Dress modestly for the monastery, wear comfortable shoes for the steps, and carry a layer, as the summit can be cool and windy.
