Multicultural island shaped by sugar heritage. Colonial architecture, Hindu temples, and pristine beaches.
A multicultural island paradise where crystalline beaches, vibrant cultures, and natural wonders create unforgettable memories.
Mauritius has undergone a massive transformation from being a deserted volcanic island into top-class luxury tourist destination and a highly diverse multi-cultural community where in the existence of Hindu temples, Christian churches, and mosques is harmonious. In today’s world, tourists travel to Mauritius discover some of the best beaches in the world, as well as other Mauritius resorts.
The iconic dodo—a flightless bird unique to Mauritius—became extinct in the 17th century due to hunting and habitat loss. Today, it symbolizes both the island's unique biodiversity and the consequences of human impact on nature.
Mauritius is home to a remarkable example of religious coexistence. Hindu temples, Islamic mosques, Christian churches, and Buddhist pagodas stand peacefully alongside each other, with citizens celebrating each other's festivals.
Over 68% of Mauritius's population is of Indian descent, brought as indentured laborers after slavery abolition in 1835. Indian culture, cuisine, language, and festivals remain central to Mauritian identity.
From a sugar‑dependent colony, Mauritius transformed into Africa's most developed economy with a diversified portfolio of tourism, manufacturing, and financial services. Its stability and prosperity make it a beacon in Africa.
Mauritius is the easiest island holiday an Indian traveller can take. There is no visa to arrange entry is free and granted on arrival and there are direct flights from four Indian cities, including Chennai and Bengaluru. About six hours in the air and you are on a turquoise lagoon.
It is also the island that will feel most familiar. Around two thirds of Mauritians are of Indian descent, there are Hindu temples across the island, Grand Bassin is a genuine place of pilgrimage, and finding good vegetarian food is not a problem you will have to solve.
Most Bayard travellers choose a 4 night beach break, a 6 night island circuit, or a longer honeymoon stay. Below, we explain the one free form you must complete before you fly, which coast suits your trip, when the cyclone season actually matters, and what a Mauritius holiday really costs.

Best season | May to October is the driest and most reliable. November and April are good shoulder months. January to March is cyclone season — see the full note below |

Flight from India | Direct from Chennai and Delhi (Air Mauritius), Mumbai (Air Mauritius and Air India) and Bengaluru (IndiGo). About 6–7.5 hours depending on city |
Getting around | Private transfers and taxis. Most visitors choose one resort and stay put — which coast you pick matters more than anything else on this page |
Do Indians need a visa for Mauritius?
No. Indian passport holders do not need to arrange a visa before travelling to Mauritius. Entry for tourism is granted free at the airport on arrival, with no application, no fee and no embassy visit. It is one of the simplest entries of any destination we sell.
The one thing you do need to do before you fly
• Complete the All-in-One Travel Form online before departure. It is free and takes a few minutes.
• It generates a PDF with a QR code. Save it to your phone and print a copy you will be asked for it on arrival.
• Do it in the days before you travel, not at the airport.
What to carry
A passport valid at least six months beyond arrival, a confirmed return ticket, your accommodation booking, and evidence of funds for your stay if asked. Travel insurance is not compulsory but we recommend it, particularly between November and April.
How long you can stay
Tourist entry covers a normal holiday comfortably, and extensions are possible in Port Louis if your plans change. If you are planning an unusually long stay, ask us to confirm the current permitted duration for your dates before you book published guidance on this has not been consistent, and we would rather check than guess.
Entry rules were correct at the time of writing and can change — recheck before booking, and see the review cadence in Step 4.
Four Indian cities have direct flights, and two of them are in South India. Air Mauritius flies nonstop from Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi; IndiGo flies nonstop from Bengaluru; Air India also serves Mumbai. A Chennai departure gets you to a Mauritian lagoon in about six hours without changing planes.
From (India) | Direct carrier(s) | Approx. flight time |
Chennai | Air Mauritius, nonstop | About 6 hours, year-round |
Bengaluru | IndiGo, nonstop | About 6 hours, year-round |
Mumbai | Air Mauritius and Air India, nonstop | About 6.25 hours, year-round |
Delhi | Air Mauritius, nonstop | About 7.5 hours, year-round |
Hyderabad, Kochi, Kolkata | No nonstop — connect via Mumbai, Bengaluru or a Gulf hub | About 10–14 hours including layover |
Arrival is at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in the south-east of the island. Transfer times vary a lot by coast about 20 minutes to the south-east, up to an hour and a quarter to Grand Baie in the north which is worth knowing when you choose your resort, particularly with a late-night arrival.

This is the decision that shapes a Mauritius holiday more than any other, because almost everyone picks one resort and stays there. The island is small, but crossing it takes longer than the map suggests, so where you sleep is where you spend your week.
• North — Grand Baie and Pereybère. The liveliest and most convenient. Restaurants, bars and shops within walking distance of most hotels, easy access to Port Louis, Pamplemousses and the northern islets. Best for first-time visitors, families, and anyone who does not want every dinner to be at the hotel.
• East — Belle Mare and Trou d'Eau Douce. The calmest and most upmarket, with the island's widest lagoons and the boats to Île aux Cerfs on your doorstep. Noticeably breezier in the winter months, which kitesurfers love and sunbathers sometimes do not. Best for honeymooners and for a quiet, resort-focused stay.
• West — Flic en Flac and Tamarin. The best sunsets on the island, the calmest swimming, dolphin watching in the early morning, and generally better value. Best for families with young children and for anyone who wants to be in the water.
• South — Le Morne and Bel Ombre. The most dramatic landscape, the quietest beaches and the fewest people. Also the furthest from restaurants and shops, and the most exposed to weather. Best for repeat visitors and for travellers who genuinely want to disconnect.
• Our rule of thumb: first trip, go north or west. Honeymoon, go east or south. If you are unsure, tell us how you want to spend your evenings and we will choose from that rather than from the brochure photographs.
Mauritius Beach Break - 5 Days / 4 Nights
Best for a first visit and for a short, restful trip
• Day 1: Arrive, transfer to your resort, evening on the beach.
• Day 2: Resort day — lagoon, pool, snorkelling, spa.
• Day 3: Île aux Cerfs by boat, with snorkelling and a beach lunch. This is a full day out, not a half-day stop.
• Day 4: Sightseeing on your side of the island — Port Louis and Pamplemousses from the north, or Chamarel and Le Morne from the south and west.
• Day 5: Morning at leisure, then the airport.

Full Island Circuit — 7 Days / 6 Nights
Best for travellers who want the island as well as the beach
Six nights lets you see all four corners without moving hotels every night. Port Louis market and Pamplemousses in the north; Chamarel's seven-coloured earth and waterfall and Black River Gorges in the south-west; Le Morne and the Grand Bassin sacred lake inland; Belle Mare and Île aux Cerfs in the east. Dolphin watching at Tamarin needs an early start and is worth it.
Honeymoon in Mauritius - 6 to 8 Nights
Best for couples who want the island to do the work
A quieter east or south coast base, a private catamaran day, a sunset cruise, a candlelit dinner on the sand and spa time, with two or three excursion days so the week has some shape. We will tell you honestly which resorts deliver the romance they photograph and which do not.

Mauritius with Grand Bassin — 6 Nights
Best for families travelling with elders, and for travellers who want the cultural side
A beach itinerary built around the island's Indian heritage: Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) and its Shiva temples, the Aapravasi Ghat UNESCO site in Port Louis where indentured labourers first landed, the temples of the north, and vegetarian dining arranged throughout. Paced gently, with shorter travel days. If you want to be there for Maha Shivaratri, tell us early — it falls in February or March and needs planning around both the crowds and the season.
One of the better things about Mauritius: there is very little to add to the price you are quoted. No tourist tax, no entry levy, no visa fee, no departure charge. What moves the number is straightforward.
What changes the price
• Resort category, which is the largest variable by a distance and ranges from comfortable three-star to some of the best five-star resorts in the Indian Ocean.
• Meal plan. This matters more in Mauritius than most places — several resorts sit away from walkable restaurants, so breakfast-only can mean paying resort prices for dinner anyway. Half-board is often the sensible middle.
• Which coast. The east and south carry the premium properties; the west and north offer better value for comparable quality.
• Season. May to October is peak for weather and price; the shoulder months are noticeably cheaper.
• Excursions. Île aux Cerfs, catamaran cruises, dolphin watching, undersea walks and the seaplane are the main add-ons. We tell you which are in your package and what the rest cost, rather than leaving them to be sold at the hotel desk.
• Whether international flights are bundled.
Travel style | Typical duration | What's included | Approx. price (per person) |
Beach break | 4 nights | 3-star hotel, breakfast, transfers, one island tour | [Insert from Bayard package sheet] |
Island circuit | 6 nights | 3–4 star hotel, breakfast, island tours, Île aux Cerfs | [Insert from Bayard package sheet] |
Premium stay | 6–7 nights | 4-star resort, half board, catamaran cruise, more excursions | [Insert from Bayard package sheet] |
Honeymoon / luxury | 7–10 nights | 4–5 star resort, all-inclusive or half board, private experiences | [Insert from Bayard package sheet] |
Price placeholders must be filled from Bayard's live package sheet before publishing. All six current cards read "On Request", which is the single biggest commercial problem on this page — see Defect 1 in Step 1. Publishing a visible from-price is the highest-impact change available here.

Mauritius has two seasons rather than four, and the honest picture is a little more nuanced than "May to December".
Months | What it's like | Verdict |
May–October | Cooler, drier and much less humid. Winter on the island, which means pleasant rather than cold. Breezier on the east coast | The safest and most comfortable window, and our usual recommendation |
November and April | Warm, mostly dry, at the edges of the cyclone season | Good shoulder months with better prices and thinner crowds |
December | Hot and humid, start of the wet season, peak holiday demand | Busy and expensive, and the weather is a gamble |
January–March | Hot, humid and the peak of the cyclone season | Cheapest by a distance — but read the note below before booking |
An honest note on cyclone season
Mauritius sits in the south-west Indian Ocean cyclone belt. The season runs roughly November to April and peaks between January and March. Most trips in that window are completely fine, and the island handles weather well but when a cyclone warning is issued, resorts move guests indoors, boat excursions and Île aux Cerfs trips are cancelled outright, and flights can be disrupted for days. That is a different kind of risk from "it might rain".
If your dates fall in that window, we will say so plainly, recommend travel insurance that covers weather disruption, build some slack around your return, and suggest a resort with enough indoors to make a wet day bearable. Plenty of people have excellent February holidays in Mauritius. They just plan them differently.
Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao)
A crater lake in the southern highlands, held sacred by Mauritian Hindus and believed to contain water from the Ganges, ringed by temples and presided over by a towering statue of Shiva. At Maha Shivaratri it becomes the focus of one of the largest Hindu pilgrimages anywhere outside India, with hundreds of thousands walking to the lake. Worth visiting at any time of year, and genuinely moving for many of our travellers.
Chamarel and the south-west
The seven-coloured earth dunes of volcanic soil in distinct bands of red, brown and violet plus the Chamarel waterfall, a rum distillery worth the stop, and Black River Gorges National Park for the island's remaining native forest. The best half-day out in Mauritius.
Le Morne Brabant
A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most photographed mountain on the island, with a difficult history as a refuge for escaped slaves. The "underwater waterfall" you may have seen in photographs is an optical illusion created by sand and silt moving off the shelf here it is only visible from the air, on a helicopter or seaplane flight, and cannot be seen from the beach or a boat. Worth doing if the budget allows; worth knowing before you build a trip around it.
Île aux Cerfs and the lagoon
An islet off the east coast reached by boat, with the best beaches and water sports on the island. It is a full-day excursion including the crossing, lunch and usually a stop at the Grande Rivière Sud-Est waterfall. Popular, so go early.
Port Louis, Pamplemousses and the sugar story
The Central Market and Caudan Waterfront in Port Louis, the Aapravasi Ghat UNESCO site where indentured labourers from India first landed, and the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden with its giant water lilies. The sugar museum at L'Aventure du Sucre tells the island's economic and human history better than any guidebook.
Money
The Mauritian Rupee (MUR) is the local currency. Despite the shared name and symbol it is not the Indian Rupee and the two are not interchangeable roughly, one Mauritian Rupee is worth around two Indian Rupees, so check before you convert in your head. Cards are widely accepted; carry some cash for markets, taxis and tips.
Language
English is the official language and is used in government, signage and tourism. French dominates day-to-day life and media, and Mauritian Creole is what most people actually speak to each other. Bhojpuri is widely understood among the Indian-origin community. You will have no difficulty in English anywhere a visitor goes.
Food
One of the easiest destinations we sell for Indian travellers. Indian food is not a special request here it is part of the national cuisine, alongside Creole, French and Chinese influences. Vegetarian options are normal everywhere. Tell us about Jain requirements at booking and we will brief the resort.
Getting around
Mauritius drives on the left, which will feel familiar. Most visitors use private transfers and taxis; self-drive is straightforward if you want it. Distances are short but roads are winding — allow more time than the map suggests, particularly between the north and the south.
Common mistakes to avoid
• Forgetting the All-in-One Travel Form. It is free and quick, but it is not optional.
• Choosing a resort from photographs without thinking about which coast it is on. It is the decision that shapes the whole trip.
• Booking January to March purely on price without understanding what a cyclone warning actually means for your excursions.
• Expecting to see the "underwater waterfall" from the beach. It is an aerial illusion and needs a helicopter or seaplane.
• Assuming Mauritian and Indian Rupees are roughly equivalent. They are not.
• Booking breakfast-only at a remote resort and then paying resort prices for every dinner.
• Treating Île aux Cerfs as a half-day stop. It is a full day.
Included | Not included |
Resort or hotel stay on the coast that suits your trip, in the category you choose | International airfare from India, unless bundled |
Daily breakfast, with half-board and all-inclusive options where they make sense | Excursions not listed in your itinerary — we tell you what each costs upfront |
Airport transfers and sightseeing transport | The seaplane or helicopter flight over Le Morne |
Island tours and excursions as specified — typically Île aux Cerfs, Chamarel, Port Louis and Pamplemousses | Travel insurance, which we recommend especially from November to April |
English-speaking guides and on-trip assistance | Personal expenses: shopping, tips, minibar and premium spa treatments |
Guidance on completing your All-in-One Travel Form before departure | Anything not explicitly listed in your confirmed itinerary |
• We choose your coast before we choose your resort. It is the decision that determines whether the holiday suits you, and it is the one most bookings get wrong.
• Direct-flight routings from Chennai, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi, so you are not connecting through a Gulf hub for a six-hour journey.
• Excursions priced and explained upfront rather than sold to you at the hotel desk on day two.
• Honest seasonal advice, including what a cyclone warning actually means if your dates fall between November and April.
• Itineraries that make use of the island's Indian heritage — Grand Bassin, Aapravasi Ghat, the temples — for travellers who want more than a lagoon.
• Dietary requirements handled at the planning stage, which on this island is easy and should be.

Do Indians need a visa for Mauritius?
No. Indian passport holders do not need to arrange a visa in advance. Entry for tourism is granted free on arrival, with no application, no fee and no embassy visit. You do need to complete the free All-in-One Travel Form online before you fly.
What is the All-in-One Travel Form?
It is Mauritius's mandatory online arrival form, completed free of charge before departure. It generates a PDF with a QR code that you present on arrival. Save it to your phone and print a copy. It takes a few minutes and should be done before you travel, not at the airport.
How long can I stay in Mauritius?
Tourist entry covers a normal holiday comfortably, and extensions can be applied for in Port Louis. If you are planning an unusually long stay, ask us to confirm the current permitted duration for your travel dates — published guidance on this has not been consistent and we would rather check than guess.
Are there direct flights from India to Mauritius?
Yes, from four cities. Air Mauritius flies nonstop from Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi; IndiGo flies nonstop from Bengaluru; Air India also serves Mumbai. Chennai and Bengaluru are about six hours, Mumbai a little over six, Delhi around seven and a half. Hyderabad, Kochi and Kolkata require a connection.
Which side of Mauritius should I stay on?
North for convenience, restaurants and nightlife good for first-timers and families. East for calm lagoons and luxury — good for honeymooners, though it is breezier in winter. West for sunsets, easy swimming and value — good with young children. South for dramatic scenery and quiet, though it is furthest from everything. Tell us how you want to spend your evenings and we will pick from that.
How many days do I need in Mauritius?
Four nights is enough for a beach break with one or two excursions. Six or seven lets you see all four corners of the island without rushing. Eight to ten suits an unhurried honeymoon.
What is the best time to visit Mauritius?
May to October is the driest and most comfortable. November and April are good shoulder months. January to March is the peak of the cyclone season — cheapest, but with real disruption risk.
Is it safe to travel during cyclone season?
Usually, and most trips between January and March are fine. But when a warning is issued, resorts move guests indoors, boat excursions are cancelled and flights can be disrupted for days. If your dates fall in that window we will say so, recommend insurance that covers weather disruption, and build some slack around your return.
Are there hidden costs in Mauritius?
Very few, which is one of the destination's advantages. There is no tourist tax, no entry levy, no visa fee and no departure charge. The main variable outside your package is excursions — we tell you which are included and what the others cost before you go.
Should I choose breakfast-only, half board or all-inclusive?
It depends on where you stay. Several resorts sit away from walkable restaurants, so breakfast-only can mean paying resort prices for dinner anyway. In the north and west, where there are restaurants nearby, breakfast-only often works well. We advise per resort rather than as a rule.
Can I visit Grand Bassin?
Yes, and we would encourage it. Ganga Talao is a sacred crater lake in the southern highlands with Shiva temples and a striking statue, and it is a genuine place of pilgrimage rather than a photo stop. At Maha Shivaratri it hosts one of the largest Hindu pilgrimages outside India. Tell us early if you want to be there for it.
Can I see the underwater waterfall?
Only from the air. It is an optical illusion created by sand moving off the underwater shelf near Le Morne, and it is visible on a helicopter or seaplane flight — not from the beach or a boat. It is a paid add-on and worth knowing about before you build a trip around it.
Is Mauritius good for vegetarians?
Very. Indian food is part of the national cuisine rather than a visitor concession, and vegetarian options are normal everywhere. Around two-thirds of Mauritians are of Indian descent. Tell us about Jain requirements at booking and we will brief the resort.
Mauritius or the Maldives?
The Maldives is one island, one resort, and pure beach. Mauritius is a real country with mountains, waterfalls, markets, temples and towns as well as lagoons, so there is far more to do — and it is culturally much more familiar for Indian travellers. If you want to do nothing at all, the Maldives. If you want a holiday with things in it, Mauritius. We sell both and will tell you honestly which suits you.
What is included in a Bayard Mauritius package?
Your resort stay, breakfast (with half-board and all-inclusive options), airport and sightseeing transfers, the island tours and excursions listed in your itinerary, English-speaking guides and on-trip support. International airfare, additional excursions, the seaplane, insurance and personal expenses are quoted separately unless bundled.

Arab and Portuguese sailors visited the island, but Mauritius remained largely uninhabited. The famous dodo bird—found nowhere else on Earth—thrived in isolation for millennia.
The Dutch claimed Mauritius, naming it after Prince Maurice of Nassau. They introduced sugar cane, established settlements, and brought enslaved people from Africa and Madagascar. The dodo was hunted to extinction during this period.
France took control and renamed the island 'Île de France.' Sugar plantations flourished, bringing hundreds of thousands of enslaved people and indentured laborers from India. French culture, language, and architecture deeply influenced the island.
Britain conquered Mauritius in 1810. The British abolished slavery in 1835, replacing it with indentured labor from India, which transformed the demographic landscape. English became increasingly used alongside French.
Mauritius gained independence on March 12, 1968, with Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam as Prime Minister. It became a republic in 1992, retaining the Commonwealth connection while establishing its own identity.
From a monoculture economy dependent on sugar, Mauritius transformed into a stable, prosperous multi-sector economy with thriving tourism, financial services, and manufacturing. It is now considered Africa's most developed nation.
