Escape to the world of unparalleled luxury travel where turquoise lagoons meet pristine white sands.
Paradise found—turquoise lagoons, white sand beaches, and underwater coral kingdoms in the Indian Ocean.
The Maldives, an archipelago of 1,190 coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, has a 2,000+ year history as a Buddhist kingdom, Islamic sultanate, and colonial outpost. Today it stands as an independent island nation and world's premier luxury tropical destination.
Before the 1153 Islamic conversion, the Maldives was a thriving Buddhist kingdom. Ancient stupas, carved Buddhist carvings, and ruins remain underwater or on remote islands, offering glimpses into a lost spiritual past.
The Maldives sits at an average elevation of just 1.5 meters above sea level, making it the world's lowest-lying country. Climate change and rising oceans pose an existential threat, motivating aggressive environmental initiatives.
In 1972, the first resort opened on Kuredu Island. Today, over 150+ luxury resorts and guesthouses on separate islands employ half the nation's workforce, transforming this remote archipelago into a US$2 billion tourism economy.
Situated on the world's busiest shipping lanes, the Maldives has historically controlled maritime trade between Europe, Arabia, India, and China. Today, its strategic location and global diplomatic voice remain significant.
A Maldives tour packages from India costs roughly ₹40,000 to ₹1,32,000+ per person, and getting there is genuinely simple: IndiGo flies nonstop from Bengaluru, Kochi and Mumbai, Maldivian flies nonstop from Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram, and Indian citizens get a completely free 30-day visa on arrival no application, no embassy visit.
Most Bayard traveller’s choose a compact 4-night single-island stay, a 5-night beach-villa-and-water-villa split, or a 6-night all-inclusive escape. Below, we explain the one pre-travel step you do actually need to do (it isn’t a visa), tell you exactly which of your nearest airports has a direct flight, help you understand the real difference between a local-island guesthouse stay and a private-resort-island stay, and give you the honest, all-in cost picture once Green Tax is added in.
Ideal duration | 4 nights for a single-island stay; 5–6 nights for a beach-villa/water-villa split or an all-inclusive escape |
Cost from India | ₹40,000–₹1,32,000+ per person, depending on whether you choose a local-island guesthouse or a private resort island — see the honest breakdown below |
Best season | November–April for the most reliable sunshine and calmer seas; May–October is wetter but quieter and often better value |
Entry for Indians | Free 30-day visa on arrival — no advance application. One mandatory step: the online IMUGA Traveller Declaration, submitted within 96 hours before you fly. Last verified 28 August 2026 — full section below |
Flight from India | Direct, year-round service from Bengaluru, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Mumbai; seasonal from Hyderabad; Delhi’s direct route was launching around September 2026 at the time of writing; Chennai currently needs a one-stop connection |
Main entry point | Malé (Velana International Airport), followed by a speedboat or seaplane transfer to your resort or guesthouse island |
No — Indian citizens get a genuinely free 30-day tourist visa on arrival, with no advance application and no fee. This is one of the simplest entry processes in Bayard’s entire international portfolio. But “no visa application” doesn’t mean nothing needs doing before you fly.
The one thing you do need to do: the IMUGA Traveller Declaration
• Every traveller, including Indians, must complete an online Traveller Declaration through the Maldives Immigration IMUGA portal within 96 hours before arrival.
• It’s free, takes a few minutes, and asks for your passport, flight and accommodation details.
• You’ll be asked to show the confirmation (usually a QR code) at immigration alongside your passport, return ticket and accommodation booking.
• Skipping this doesn’t stop you boarding your flight, but it can slow you down at immigration in Malé, do it before you fly, not at the airport.
What else to carry: a passport valid for at least one month beyond your stay (six months is safer), a confirmed return or onward ticket departing within 30 days, confirmed accommodation for your full stay, and proof of funds or a prepaid booking confirmation if asked.
Visa and IMUGA requirements were correct at the time of writing and can change recheck immediately before booking, and see the review cadence in Step 4.
Bayard’s Maldives packages range from ₹40,000 per person for a compact local-island stay to ₹1,32,000+ per person for a longer, all-inclusive resort-island escape. But the quoted package price isn’t always the full cost here’s what else to budget for.
The taxes and fees most quotes don’t spell out
Maldives resorts are required to add a 17% Tourism Goods and Services Tax and a 10% service charge to the room rate 27% combined, which most published resort rates already include, but always worth confirming. On top of that, every tourist pays a separate Green Tax: $12 per person, per night at resort islands (doubled from $6 in January 2025), or $6 per person, per night at smaller guesthouses on local inhabited islands. This is usually collected separately often in cash at check-out rather than folded into your package price. For a couple on a 7-night resort stay, that’s an extra $168 (roughly ₹14,500) beyond the quoted package cost.
Maldives package price by travel style
Travel style | Typical duration | What’s included | Approx. price (per person) |
Local island stay | 3–4 nights | Guesthouse on an inhabited local island, breakfast, speedboat transfer | ₹40,000–₹60,000 |
Resort island, beach villa | 3–4 nights | Private resort island, beach villa, breakfast or half board | ₹60,000–₹95,000 |
Resort island, split stay | 4–5 nights | Beach villa + overwater villa combination | ₹75,000–₹1,20,000 |
Resort island, all-inclusive | 4–5 nights | Higher-category resort, all-inclusive meals and select drinks | ₹1,00,000–₹1,32,000+ |
Confirm every figure, and any resorts beyond those shown here, against Bayard’s current package sheet before publishing — see Defect 6 in Step 1.

This is the single most important decision in planning a Maldives trip, and it’s about more than budget.
• A local island stay (such as Maafushi) means you’re on an inhabited island where Maldivians live and work genuinely more affordable, with guesthouses instead of resort villas, and public beaches. The catch: alcohol isn’t served (it’s a Muslim country, and local islands follow local customs), swimwear is restricted to a designated “bikini beach” area rather than the whole shoreline, and the experience is closer to a budget beach town than a private paradise.
• A resort island stay means the entire island is the resort full alcohol service, no local dress-code restrictions on the beach, and a private, all-to-yourself feel. The trade-off is cost: resort islands run meaningfully higher than local-island guesthouses for a comparable number of nights.
• Neither is “better” — a local island is a genuinely good, honest choice for budget-conscious travellers or those who want a more authentic, everyday feel; a resort island is the right choice for honeymooners, anniversaries, or anyone wanting the classic overwater-villa Maldives experience. Knowing which one you’re booking, and why, matters more than the price tag alone.
Classic Maldives Island Stay - 4 Days / 3 Nights
Best for first-time visitors and short breaks
• Day 1: Arrive in Malé, transfer by speedboat or seaplane to your island, check in and relax.
• Day 2: Beach time, snorkelling, kayaking, or simply relaxing at your resort or guesthouse.
• Day 3: Optional excursions — dolphin cruise, sunset cruise, or sandbank visit.
• Day 4: Departure after breakfast.
Beach Villa & Water Villa Split - 5 Days / 4 Nights
Best for couples and honeymooners wanting both experiences
• Day 1: Arrive in Malé, transfer to resort, check into a beach villa.
• Day 2: Beach villa, water sports, resort facilities.
• Day 3: Shift to an overwater villa; sunset dinner if desired.
• Day 4: Full day in the water villa, optional spa.
• Day 5: Departure.

The Maldives is genuinely one of the best-connected and shortest international trips in Bayard’s whole portfolio for South Indian travellers. IndiGo flies nonstop from Bengaluru, Kochi and Mumbai; Maldivian flies nonstop from Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram with flight times as short as 2–3 hours on the South Indian routes.
From (India) | Direct carrier(s) | Approx. flight time / frequency |
Bengaluru | IndiGo | About 2–3 hours nonstop, year-round |
Kochi | IndiGo, Maldivian | About 2 hours nonstop, year-round |
Thiruvananthapuram | IndiGo, Maldivian | About 2 hours nonstop, year-round |
Mumbai | IndiGo | About 3 hours nonstop, year-round |
Hyderabad | IndiGo | About 3 hours nonstop, seasonal — confirm current-season availability |
Delhi | Air India | About 4–4.5 hours nonstop; launched around September 2026 — confirm the route is currently active |
Chennai | No confirmed nonstop service | Connect via Bengaluru, Colombo or a Gulf hub |
Flying from Bengaluru, Kochi, Trivandrum or Mumbai
All four cities have genuine, current, year-round nonstop options — among the shortest and most convenient international routes in Bayard’s whole portfolio.
Flying from Hyderabad, Delhi or Chennai
Hyderabad’s direct IndiGo service is seasonal check it’s currently running for your travel dates. Delhi’s Air India nonstop was a brand-new route around the time of writing — confirm it has launched before booking around it. Chennai currently has no confirmed nonstop option; the practical routing is a one-stop connection.
For most Indian travellers, the best time to visit Maldives is November–April.
Months | What it’s like | Verdict |
November–April | Drier, sunnier, calmer seas on average | Best overall for reliable beach weather; also the most popular and priciest window |
May–October | Wetter, monsoon-influenced, with more wind and rain | Quieter and often better value; also the best window for the bioluminescence phenomenon, if you’re chasing it |
December–January, and long weekends | Peak demand | Books up fastest and costs the most plan and book well ahead |
If you want the most reliable sunshine, November–April is the safer bet. If you don’t mind occasional rain in exchange for quieter beaches and better prices, May–October is a genuine, underused alternative.
This is a real, beautiful natural phenomenon glowing blue plankton visible in shallow water on dark nights but it comes with real caveats most photos and listings leave out. It’s most reliably reported at specific islands (Vaadhoo in Raa Atoll, Mudhdhoo in Baa Atoll, Kuredu in Lhaviyani Atoll), is best on new-moon nights roughly between June and October, and is never guaranteed even experienced local guides are upfront that some nights, even at the right island, nothing happens. If seeing it is a priority for your trip, ask your Bayard consultant which specific resorts or islands give you the best realistic odds, rather than assuming any Maldives resort can deliver it on demand.
Island & Resort Stay
Most of the Maldives experience comes from the island you choose. Best for all travellers, especially couples and families wanting a single comfortable base. Includes beach and/or water villa stays, house-reef snorkelling, and resort restaurants and bars.
Water Activities & Excursions
Snorkelling, scuba diving, dolphin and sunset cruises, glass-bottom boat rides, kayaking and paddleboarding. Best for active travellers and families with older children.
Romantic & Private Experiences
Private candlelight beach dinners, sandbank picnics, spa treatments and couples’ massages, and floating breakfasts where offered. Best for honeymooners and anniversary trips.
Underwater Dining - A Rare, Premium Add-On
A small number of ultra-luxury resorts (such as Conrad Maldives Rangali Island’s Ithaa) offer genuine underwater restaurant dining. This isn’t available at most resorts and typically needs advance reservation and a meaningfully higher budget — ask your Bayard consultant if this is a priority rather than assuming it’s a standard inclusion.
Currency
The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) is the official currency, but almost all resort transactions are conducted in US Dollars or by card — most travellers never need to exchange money at all. Rufiyaa is mainly used on local inhabited islands like Malé or Maafushi for smaller, everyday purchases.
Local island etiquette
If you’re staying on a local island (such as Maafushi), alcohol isn’t served, and swimwear is restricted to a designated “bikini beach” area — modest dress is expected elsewhere on the island, in line with local Islamic customs. Resort islands don’t carry these restrictions.
Getting around
After arriving at Malé, you’ll transfer to your island by speedboat (nearby atolls, usually 20 minutes to 2 hours) or seaplane (further atolls, roughly 30–45 minutes) — your resort or guesthouse will confirm which applies to you.
Common mistakes to avoid
• Assuming the free visa-on-arrival means nothing needs doing in advance — the IMUGA Traveller Declaration is a separate, mandatory step.
• Budgeting only the quoted package price without accounting for Green Tax, which is usually paid separately at check-out.
• Booking a standard resort package while assuming you’ll definitely see the “Sea of Stars” bioluminescence — it’s real, but atoll-specific and never guaranteed.
• Choosing a local-island guesthouse without realising alcohol isn’t served there, or a resort island without realising it costs meaningfully more for the same number of nights.
• Assuming Chennai has a direct flight to Malé — check current routing before planning your journey there.
Included | Not included |
Resort or guesthouse stay in a beach villa, water villa, or standard room, depending on package | International airfare, unless you ask us to bundle it |
Daily breakfast, half-board, full-board, or all-inclusive meal plans, as specified | Green Tax and any taxes not already built into the quoted rate — always confirm what’s included |
Airport–resort transfers by speedboat or seaplane, as per your island | Premium activities: scuba diving, motorised water sports, private dinners |
Taxes and resort service charges as specified in your package | Travel insurance |
On-trip support and assistance | Personal expenses: spa, shopping, tips and minibar charges |
• The real, all-in cost explained upfront — including Green Tax and service charges most quotes leave out, so there are no surprises at checkout
• Honest local-island-vs-resort-island guidance, so you know exactly what kind of holiday you’re booking and why it costs what it costs
• The one genuine pre-travel step (IMUGA) explained clearly, instead of a vague “any travel declarations if required” line
• Straight answers on which island and which season actually give you the best odds of seeing the Sea of Stars, if that’s a priority for your trip
Talk to a Maldives specialist →
Do Indians need a visa for the Maldives?
No, Indian citizens get a free 30-day tourist visa on arrival, with no advance application or fee. You do need to complete the online IMUGA Traveller Declaration within 96 hours before you fly, which is separate from the visa itself.
What is the IMUGA declaration?
It’s a mandatory online Traveller Declaration every visitor to the Maldives must complete before arrival, submitted through the Maldives Immigration IMUGA portal within 96 hours of your flight. It’s free and takes a few minutes.
Are there direct flights from India to the Maldives?
Yes. IndiGo flies nonstop from Bengaluru, Kochi and Mumbai; Maldivian flies nonstop from Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. Hyderabad’s IndiGo service is seasonal, and Delhi’s Air India nonstop was a newly launching route around September 2026. Chennai currently has no confirmed nonstop service.
How much does a Maldives trip cost from India?
Bayard’s Maldives packages range from around ₹40,000 per person for a local-island guesthouse stay to ₹1,32,000+ per person for a longer, all-inclusive resort-island escape. Remember that Green Tax ($12 per person per night at resorts) is usually charged separately, on top of your package price.
What is Green Tax, and is it included in my package price?
Green Tax is a Maldives government charge of $12 per person, per night at resort islands ($6 at smaller local-island guesthouses), usually collected separately — often in cash at check-out — rather than included in your quoted package price. Always confirm this with your consultant.
Should I choose a local island or a resort island?
A local island (like Maafushi) is more affordable but doesn’t serve alcohol and restricts swimwear to a designated beach area. A resort island costs more but offers full alcohol service and a private, all-to-yourself island experience. Neither is objectively better — it depends on the kind of holiday you want.
How many days are enough for the Maldives?
4 nights suits a single-island stay comfortably. 5–6 nights allows a beach-villa/water-villa split or a more relaxed all-inclusive escape.
What is the best time to visit the Maldives from India?
November–April for the most reliable sunshine and calmer seas. May–October is wetter but quieter, often better value, and is also the better window if you’re hoping to see the Sea of Stars bioluminescence.
Will I definitely see the Sea of Stars bioluminescence?
No — it’s a real phenomenon but never guaranteed, even at the islands most associated with it (Vaadhoo, Mudhdhoo, Kuredu) and even on the best nights (new moon, roughly June–October). Ask your consultant which resorts give you the best realistic odds if this is a priority.
Is underwater dining available at every resort?
No — it’s offered at only a small number of ultra-luxury resorts, needs advance reservation, and costs significantly more than standard resort dining. Ask your consultant if this is something you specifically want to include.
What currency should I carry for the Maldives?
Most resort transactions are in US Dollars or by card — you rarely need to exchange for the local Rufiyaa (MVR) unless you’re spending time on a local inhabited island.
What is included in a Bayard Maldives package?
Your resort or guesthouse stay, the meal plan specified (breakfast, half-board, full-board or all-inclusive), airport-to-island transfers, and on-trip support. International airfare, Green Tax, premium activities and personal expenses are quoted separately unless bundled.

The Maldives, an archipelago of 1,190 coral islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, has a 2,000+ year history as a Buddhist kingdom, Islamic sultanate, and colonial outpost. Today it stands as an independent island nation and world's premier luxury tropical destination.
Early inhabitants arrived from Sri Lanka and India. The Maldives thrived as a Buddhist kingdom, later documented by travelers like Ibn Battuta. Ancient stupas and ruins scattered across islands testify to this rich heritage.
Islam arrived in 1153, marking a cultural transformation. The Maldives became an Islamic sultanate, with its own currency, sultanate governance, and strategic control of Indian Ocean trade routes linking Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
Under British protection as a protectorate, the Maldives retained autonomy over internal affairs while Britain controlled defense and foreign policy. This period saw modernization of infrastructure and governance systems.
The Maldives gained independence on July 26, 1965, transitioning from a sultanate to a republic in 1968. Today, it is a presidential democracy with a strategic location in global maritime commerce.
With no mineral resources, the Maldives pivoted to tourism in 1972, establishing luxury resorts on separate islands. Tourism now comprises over 60% of GDP and is the lifeblood of the nation's economy.
As a nation most vulnerable to climate change and rising sea levels, the Maldives has become a global voice for environmental protection, climate action, and sustainable island development.
