Do Indians need a visa for Spain in 2026?

Yes every Indian passport holder needs a Schengen (Type C) short-stay visa before travelling to Spain. There is no visa-on-arrival, no e-visa, and no exemption for tourism. A successful visa lets you stay up to 90 days within any 180-day period, and covers travel across all 29 Schengen countries, not just Spain.

What it actually costs in 2026

• The Schengen visa fee is €90 per adult (children aged 6–12 pay €45; under-6s are free) — this rose from €80 in June 2024, so if you've seen the older figure quoted elsewhere, it's out of date.

• Spain's visa applications in India are processed through BLS International, which charges its own service fee on top of the government fee — this was revised upward in late 2025, and currently adds roughly ₹1,700–3,100 depending on your city.

• Add mandatory travel insurance (minimum €30,000 medical coverage), passport photographs and courier costs, and the realistic all-in figure per adult applicant is roughly ₹9,000–15,000 — budget at the higher end and treat any lower figure you see quoted elsewhere with some caution.

• The fee is non-refundable even if your application is refused, so it's worth getting the documentation right the first time — Spain's own mission runs a comparatively strong approval rate (around 88% for recent Indian applicants), but incomplete or inconsistent paperwork is the most common cause of the roughly 12–15% that don't succeed.

Timeline: apply earlier than you think you need to

• Processing typically takes 10–15 working days once your application is submitted, but appointment slots at BLS centres can themselves take time to secure, especially close to peak season (April–June, and around Christmas/New Year).

• You can apply up to 6 months, and should apply at least 4–6 weeks, before your travel dates — don't wait until inside a month of departure.

Two things that changed recently and matter at the airport, not just at the consulate

• The Entry/Exit System (EES): since 10 April 2026, Spain (like every Schengen country) registers non-EU travellers biometrically — a fingerprint scan and facial photo — at first entry, replacing the old manual passport stamp. It costs nothing and adds a few minutes at immigration; just don't be surprised it isn't a simple stamp anymore.

• ETIAS: ETIAS is a separate, new authorisation scheme launching in the final quarter of 2026 — but it only applies to travellers from visa-exempt countries. Since Indian passport holders already need a full Schengen visa, ETIAS changes nothing for you. If you've seen ETIAS headlines and wondered whether it's a new step for your Spain trip, it isn't.

What else to carry: a passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area (with at least two blank pages), your visa sticker, proof of the exact travel dates and accommodation the visa was issued for, and your travel insurance policy document. Carry printed copies, not just digital ones.

For a couple spending two nights in a four-star Barcelona hotel, that's about €33.60 (roughly ₹3,100) beyond the quoted package cost. Getting to Spain from India

No Indian city currently has a nonstop flight to Spain this is true for every route, not just some. Every option to Madrid or Barcelona involves one stop, either via a Gulf hub (Dubai with Emirates, Abu Dhabi with Etihad, Doha with Qatar Airways) or a European hub (Frankfurt or Munich with Lufthansa, Paris with Air France, Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, or Amsterdam with KLM), with onward connections also available via Iberia and Vueling.

There was once a nonstop Air India service between Delhi and Madrid (resumed in 2019), but it has since been discontinued — current schedules and independent route-tracking data both confirm no airline currently flies the route nonstop. Best time to visit Spain from India

For most Indian travellers, April–June and September–October are genuinely the best windows — comfortable temperatures for city walking, beach time and museum visits, without the peak-summer crowds or heat.

Granada and the Alhambra - a current travel update

The Alhambra is open and remains one of the essential experiences of any Spain trip — but it's worth knowing what's changed. A magnitude-5.0 earthquake struck Granada on 15 August 2026, followed by further tremors over the following days. The Alhambra was briefly evacuated and closed as a precaution on 18 August, then reopened the next day with its main visitor route — the Nasrid Palaces and the Generalife gardens — open as normal, on adapted evacuation routes as a precaution against aftershocks.

What's currently closed: the Alcazaba, the complex's oldest fortress section, and the separate Andalusi Monuments in the Albaicín district, remain closed "until further notice" while inspections continue — some minor, localised damage was found there (to battlements and rendered surfaces), though no significant structural damage has been reported anywhere in the complex. As of this writing, no reopening date has been confirmed.

What this means for your trip: the Nasrid Palaces and Generalife — genuinely the heart of the Alhambra experience, and what most travellers picture when they imagine a visit remain fully open.
