Big Almaty Lake (BAL) sits at 2,500m in the Ile-Alatau National Park, just 25km from Almaty city center. The lake supplies Almaty's main water source. Hike follows a water pipe infrastructure up steep alpine terrain through wildflower meadows. The lake's color changes seasonally from turquoise to deep blue, reflecting surrounding peaks including Sovetov (4,317m).
