01 / Overview

Huế was Vietnam's imperial capital from 1802 to 1945, and the Imperial City was the ceremonial heart of the dynasty. Enter through Ngọ Môn (the Noon Gate), then walk past Thái Hòa Palace, restored pavilions, temples and gardens to the Forbidden Purple City, once reserved for the emperor's household. Much was damaged in the 1968 fighting, so ruined courtyards sit beside rebuilt halls. The grounds are large and shade is limited: wear a hat, carry water and allow two to three hours, or hire an electric buggy. The royal tombs outside the city need separate tickets.
