An Uttar Pradesh package costs roughly ₹20,000 to ₹42,000+ per person, and getting there from South India is easier than most people expect: IndiGo, Akasa Air and Air India Express all fly nonstop from Bengaluru to both Varanasi and Lucknow in around two and a half hours, with daily direct service from Hyderabad and Chennai too.
The one thing worth knowing before you plan anything else: Uttar Pradesh is not a single destination. The Taj Mahal sits at the far western edge of the state. Varanasi, Ayodhya and Prayagraj cluster at the far eastern edge, roughly 600 km and seven hours away by the fastest train. Lucknow sits in between. Most travellers choose one end. Below, we explain which circuit suits your days and your reason for going, what darshan passes and monument tickets actually cost, and the access rules — closure days, booking windows, timing — that decide whether a trip works or doesn’t.

Ideal duration | 3 nights for Varanasi alone; 4–5 nights for the eastern spiritual circuit (Varanasi–Sarnath–Prayagraj–Ayodhya); 6+ nights if you want both the Taj Mahal and Varanasi on one trip |
Cost from India | ₹20,000–₹42,000+ per person, depending on circuit length, hotel category and how many darshan and aarti slots you want booked — see the full breakdown below |
Best season | October to March. November, February and March are the sweet spot; December and January are lovely but bring dense fog that disrupts flights and trains |
Entry for Indians | Domestic no visa, no permit, no advance registration. A valid government photo ID is all you need to carry |
What does need booking ahead | Temple darshan and aarti passes. Free at Ayodhya, paid at Kashi Vishwanath, and both need booking in advance full section below |
Flights from South India | Direct daily to Varanasi and Lucknow from Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai (about 2–3 hours). For the Taj Mahal, fly to Delhi and travel on to Agra |
Main entry points | Varanasi (VNS) for the eastern circuit; Lucknow (LKO) for Ayodhya and Awadh; Delhi for Agra and the western circuit |
No. Uttar Pradesh is a domestic destination — there is no visa, no permit, no e-registration and no advance immigration step of any kind. Carry a valid government photo ID (Aadhaar, voter ID, driving licence or passport) and that is genuinely all that’s required to travel and to check into hotels.
But “no entry requirement” isn’t the same as “nothing to arrange.” Three things in Uttar Pradesh do need to be sorted before you travel, and getting them wrong is the most common reason a trip disappoints:
• Closure days and timing windows. The Taj Mahal is closed to visitors every Friday. Temple darshan queues pause during aarti. Several sites close for a midday break.
• Darshan and aarti passes. These work differently at every temple — free at some, paid at others, and most need booking days or weeks ahead.
• Touts. At both Varanasi and Ayodhya, people outside the temple will offer “VIP darshan” at prices far above the official rate, sometimes for access that isn’t sold at all.
The next three sections cover each of these.
This is the part of an Uttar Pradesh trip nobody explains properly, and it costs travellers both money and time. The rules are genuinely different at every major site.
Site | General entry | Fast-track / special access | How to book |
Taj Mahal, Agra | ₹50 per adult for Indian citizens (complex entry). Children under 15 free | ₹200 extra per adult to enter the main mausoleum chamber itself optional, and worth it | ASI’s official online ticketing, or at the gate |
Ram Mandir, Ayodhya | Free | Sugam Darshan and aarti passes are also completely free. Book ahead on the temple trust’s portal passes typically open around 15 days in advance, with a limit per mobile number and an ID required | Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra’s official portal |
Kashi Vishwanath, Varanasi | Free | Sugam Darshan is a paid ticket here, and the aartis are separately ticketed — Mangala Aarti costs meaningfully more than the others | shrikashivishwanath.org the temple’s own portal |
Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri | Modest ASI ticket per site for Indian citizens | — | At the gate or ASI online |
The rate we most want you to know: Ayodhya’s Ram Mandir does not sell paid VIP darshan. Every form of access there general, Sugam, and aarti is free. If anyone quotes you a price for Ayodhya darshan, that is not an official product. At Kashi Vishwanath the paid Sugam ticket is real and official, but the rates quoted by touts in the lanes outside are typically several times the temple’s own price.

• It is closed every Friday. Completely, for general visitors, without exception the mosque inside the complex is in use for prayers. This is the single most common Agra planning mistake.
• It opens and closes with the sun, not the clock roughly half an hour before sunrise to half an hour before sunset. Opening time therefore shifts through the year.
• Sunrise is the best visit, and it isn’t close. The first hour after opening has the softest light and the smallest crowds. It also means an early start, which is worth building into your itinerary rather than fighting.
• Night viewing exists but is limited only five nights around each full moon, in advance-booked slots, and not on Fridays. If it matters to you, plan the whole trip around the lunar calendar.
• Security screening is strict and slow. Large bags, tripods, food and drones are not permitted; allow real time at the gate.
If your dates put you in Agra on a Friday, the fix is straightforward: Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Itmad-ud-Daulah and Mehtab Bagh all remain open, and you see the Taj the following morning. We’d rather sequence around it than have you find out at the gate.
This is the most important decision in planning an Uttar Pradesh trip, and it’s about geography more than budget. The state is large, and its two great clusters are at opposite ends of it.
The eastern spiritual circuit Varanasi, Sarnath, Prayagraj, Ayodhya
The classic pilgrimage route, and where most Bayard travellers go. Varanasi’s ghats and the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh, Sarnath’s Buddhist monuments, the Sangam at Prayagraj, and the Ram Mandir at Ayodhya. Well connected by direct flights from Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai. Works in 3 nights for Varanasi alone, 4–5 nights for the full circuit. Best for pilgrims, multi-generational families and senior travellers.
The western heritage circuit Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Mathura, Vrindavan
Mughal monuments and Krishna’s Braj country. The Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are three UNESCO World Heritage Sites within a short drive of each other, with Mathura and Vrindavan an hour further. Reached by flying to Delhi and travelling on by train or road, not by flying to Agra. Works in 2–4 nights. Best for first-time visitors, families with children, and anyone whose priority is the Taj.
Lucknow and Awadh
Neither a detour nor a stopover but a genuinely distinct experience: Bara Imambara and its bhulbhulaiya, Rumi Darwaza, chikankari workshops and some of the best food in North India. 1–2 nights. It also sits geographically between the two circuits, which makes it the natural bridge if you’re doing both. Direct daily flights from Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai.
Doing both ends on one trip
Entirely possible, and increasingly popular, but it needs six nights minimum and a realistic plan for the 600 km in the middle. The practical shape is: fly into Delhi, cover Agra and Mathura, take the direct Vande Bharat east (around seven hours Agra to Banaras), then Varanasi and Ayodhya, and fly home from Varanasi. Anyone selling you the Taj Mahal and the Varanasi ghats in three nights is not being straight with you about the distances.
Classic Varanasi - 3 Days / 2 Nights
Best for first-time visitors and short spiritual breaks
• Day 1: Arrive in Varanasi, check in near the ghats, evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat.
• Day 2: Early morning boat ride on the Ganges, Kashi Vishwanath darshan (pass pre-booked), Sankat Mochan and Tulsi Manas temples.
• Day 3: Sarnath half-day or a final ghat walk, then departure.
Customize this itinerary →
Varanasi & Ayodhya - 5 Days / 4 Nights
Best for pilgrims wanting both Kashi and the Ram Mandir
• Days 1–2: Varanasi ghats, aarti, boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath.
• Day 3: Travel to Ayodhya; evening at the temple town.
• Day 4: Ram Mandir darshan on a pre-booked slot, Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhavan, Sarayu ghats.
• Day 5: Return and depart, or continue to Lucknow.
The Full Eastern Circuit - 6 Days / 5 Nights
Best for a complete spiritual journey with room to breathe
Varanasi and Sarnath, the Sangam at Prayagraj, and Ayodhya, with darshan and aarti slots booked in advance at each. Paced for senior travellers rather than compressed.
Eastern Circuit with Lucknow - 7 Days / 6 Nights
Best for groups and travellers wanting heritage alongside pilgrimage
The full eastern circuit plus one or two nights in Lucknow for Bara Imambara, Rumi Darwaza and Awadhi food.
Taj Mahal & Braj - 4 Days / 3 Nights
Best for first-time visitors whose priority is the Taj
Delhi arrival, Agra (Taj at sunrise, Agra Fort), Fatehpur Sikri, and Mathura–Vrindavan. Sequenced around the Friday closure.
Taj to Ganges - 8 Days / 7 Nights [requires new product]
Best for travellers who want the whole state on one trip
Delhi to Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Mathura and Vrindavan, then the direct train east to Varanasi, Sarnath and Ayodhya, departing from Varanasi.

Bayard’s current Uttar Pradesh packages range from ₹20,000 per person for a compact Varanasi stay to ₹42,000+ per person for a seven-day circuit covering Varanasi, Ayodhya and Lucknow. Below is what sits behind those numbers.
Travel style | Typical duration | What’s included | Approx. price (per person) |
Varanasi short break | 3–4 days | Mid-range hotel near the ghats, breakfast, transfers, key temples, evening aarti | ₹20,000–₹24,000 |
Varanasi & Ayodhya | 3–5 days | Both cities, transfers between them, darshan assistance, breakfast | ₹24,000–₹29,000 |
Full eastern circuit | 6 days | Varanasi, Sarnath, Prayagraj and Ayodhya, better hotel category, more inclusions | ₹29,000–₹35,000 |
Extended circuit with Lucknow | 7 days | The eastern circuit plus Lucknow, group-tour management, fuller inclusions | ₹35,000–₹42,000 |
What sits outside the package price
• Airfare or rail tickets to and from Uttar Pradesh, unless you ask us to bundle them.
• Monument tickets at the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri — modest per person, but they add up across a family and a multi-site day.
• Paid darshan and aarti slots where they apply. Ayodhya’s are free; Kashi Vishwanath’s Sugam Darshan and aartis are paid, and we’ll tell you what they cost when we quote.
• Boat hire, guide fees, and optional add-ons at the ghats and monuments.
• Personal expenses, shopping and tips.

Varanasi and Lucknow are both well served by daily nonstop flights from South India around two and a half hours from Bengaluru to either. Agra is the exception and needs a different approach.
From (India) | To Varanasi (VNS) | To Lucknow (LKO) |
Bengaluru | Direct, multiple carriers, about 2h30m, multiple daily | Direct, multiple carriers, about 2h35m–2h55m, multiple daily |
Hyderabad | Direct, about 2 hours, daily | Direct, about 2 hours, daily |
Chennai | Direct, about 2h25m, daily | Direct, daily |
Mumbai | Direct, about 2h15m, multiple daily | Direct, about 2 hours, multiple daily |
Kochi, Coimbatore, Trivandrum, Vizag, Vijayawada | One-stop, usually via Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Delhi | One-stop, usually via Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Delhi |
Getting to Ayodhya
Ayodhya has its own airport, but its route network has changed repeatedly since it opened and direct availability from South India varies by season and by month. Rather than plan around a route that may not be running on your dates, the reliable approach is to fly to Lucknow (about 2.5 hours by road to Ayodhya) or Varanasi, and travel on from there. We check live availability at Ayodhya when we quote — if there’s a direct flight on your dates, we’ll use it.
Getting to Agra and the Taj Mahal
Agra has no meaningful scheduled commercial air service. You fly to Delhi and travel on roughly 2 to 3 hours by train, with several fast morning services, or by road on the Yamuna Expressway. This is normal and easy, but it does mean a Taj Mahal trip is planned around Delhi, not around Agra.
Connecting the two ends by train
A direct Vande Bharat runs between Agra Cantt and Banaras in about seven hours, which is the single most useful service in the state for anyone doing both circuits. There are also Vande Bharat services from Delhi to Varanasi and from Delhi to Ayodhya Cantt.

For most travellers, October to March. Within that window there are real differences worth knowing.
Months | What it’s like | Verdict |
October–November | Warm days, cool evenings, clear skies. Deepotsav at Ayodhya and Dev Deepawali at Varanasi both fall in this window | The best overall combination of weather and atmosphere and the busiest for it |
December–January | Cold and often beautiful, but dense fog across the Ganga plain regularly delays flights into Varanasi, Lucknow and Delhi and disrupts trains | Excellent for sightseeing, but build buffer into connections and avoid tight same-day onward flights |
February–March | Comfortable, clear, and the least compromised month of the season. Braj Holi around Mathura and Vrindavan falls in this window in most years | Arguably the best time to travel, particularly for the western circuit |
April–June | Severe heat, regularly above 43°C across the plains | Not recommended, particularly for senior travellers |
July–September | Monsoon. Humid, with rain and higher river levels; some ghat areas can flood | Quietest and cheapest, but the least comfortable |
A note on festivals: Braj Holi around Mathura, Vrindavan, Barsana and Nandgaon runs across roughly a week, with Lathmar Holi at Barsana and Phoolon Wali Holi at Banke Bihari as the headline days. Deepotsav at Ayodhya and Dev Deepawali at Varanasi are the other two great annual spectacles. All three shift with the lunar calendar, all three fill accommodation months ahead, and all three are worth planning a trip around if you want to see them ask us for the current year’s dates.
The Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj concluded in February 2025, and it was an extraordinary event reported attendance ran into the hundreds of millions. It was also the last one at Prayagraj for a long time. The next Kumbh Melas, in 2027, are at Haridwar in Uttarakhand and Nashik in Maharashtra neither in Uttar Pradesh. Prayagraj’s next Ardh Kumbh is not expected until around the end of this decade.
What Prayagraj does have every single year is the Magh Mela at the Sangam, from roughly mid-January to late February a large, genuine, and far more manageable gathering that most travellers find more rewarding than a Kumbh anyway. If someone offers you a “Kumbh package” at Prayagraj for a non-Kumbh year, what you’re actually being sold is the Magh Mela, and it’s worth knowing which one you’re booking.
Uttar Pradesh’s headline sites are among the most visited places in the world. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest domestic tourist footfall of any Indian state in 2025 by a wide margin. That’s not a reason to avoid these places — it’s a reason to time them properly.
• Kashi Vishwanath is calmest mid-week and early morning. The queue pauses entirely during each of the five daily aartis, so arriving mid-aarti means waiting regardless of which ticket you hold.
• Ram Mandir, Ayodhya runs a slot system. Early-morning and late-evening slots are noticeably calmer, and are what we’d book for families with seniors or young children.
• The Taj Mahal is busiest on weekends and Indian public holidays. A weekday at sunrise is a genuinely different experience from a Sunday at midday.
• Festival peaks — Holi in Braj, Deepotsav, Dev Deepawali, Magh Mela are magnificent and extremely crowded. If you’re travelling with elderly parents or small children, we’ll be honest with you about whether a particular date is a good idea.
The Ganges at Varanasi
The evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat and a sunrise boat ride from Assi are the two experiences almost every traveller names afterwards. Best for everyone; the boat ride particularly rewards early risers and photographers.
Temple darshan across the eastern circuit
Kashi Vishwanath at Varanasi, the Ram Mandir at Ayodhya, Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhavan, and the Sangam at Prayagraj. Best for pilgrims and devotees and the part of the trip where advance pass booking makes the biggest difference to your day.
Mughal Agra
The Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri — three UNESCO World Heritage Sites within a short drive. Best for first-time visitors and families.
Buddhist Uttar Pradesh
Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon, with the Dhamek Stupa and the Ashoka Pillar. Calmer and more contemplative than the ghats, and an easy half-day from Varanasi. Kushinagar and Shravasti extend this into a fuller Buddhist circuit for those who want it.
Krishna’s Braj
Mathura and Vrindavan Krishna Janmabhoomi, Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir and the ISKCON temple. Best for devotees and for anyone visiting during Holi, when Braj is unlike anywhere else in India.
Awadhi Lucknow
Bara Imambara and its famous bhulbhulaiya, Rumi Darwaza, Chota Imambara, chikankari workshops, and Awadhi food that is worth the trip on its own. Best for culture travellers and anyone who wants a change of register mid-circuit.
What to wear
Modest dress at all temples shoulders and knees covered, for men and women. Several temples require shoes to be removed well before the entrance, so socks are worth carrying in winter.
What you cannot take in
Kashi Vishwanath and the Ram Mandir both prohibit mobile phones, bags, cameras and leather items inside. Lockers and cloakrooms exist near both, but they take time. Travel light on darshan mornings it makes a real difference to how long you spend queuing.
Getting around
Within Varanasi’s old city, walking and small boats are the only realistic options the lanes are too narrow for vehicles. At the Taj Mahal, petrol and diesel vehicles are barred from the immediate approach, so the last stretch is by electric vehicle, cycle rickshaw or on foot. Between cities, trains are generally faster and more comfortable than road for the longer hops.
Food and water
Uttar Pradesh is exceptional for vegetarian food, and Varanasi, Lucknow and Mathura each have distinct and very good local traditions. Stick to bottled or filtered water, particularly in the older parts of Varanasi.
Common mistakes to avoid
• Planning Agra on a Friday. The Taj Mahal is closed.
• Assuming the Taj Mahal and Varanasi can be combined in a short trip. They are roughly 600 km and seven hours apart.
• Turning up at Kashi Vishwanath or the Ram Mandir without a pass booked, then losing half a day to the queue.
• Paying a tout for “VIP darshan” at Ayodhya, where every form of access is free.
• Booking a tight same-day onward flight out of Varanasi or Lucknow in December or January, when fog delays are common.
• Booking a “Kumbh” package at Prayagraj in a year when there is no Kumbh.
• Underestimating the heat between April and June, particularly with elderly travellers.

Talk to an Uttar Pradesh specialist →
Do I need a visa or permit to visit Uttar Pradesh?
No. Uttar Pradesh is a domestic destination within India. There is no visa, permit or advance registration for Indian citizens a valid government photo ID is all you need to carry for travel and hotel check-in.
How many days do I need for Uttar Pradesh?
3 nights covers Varanasi comfortably. 4–5 nights covers the eastern spiritual circuit of Varanasi, Sarnath, Prayagraj and Ayodhya. If you want the Taj Mahal as well, plan on 6 nights minimum — the two ends of the state are roughly 600 km apart.
Can I see the Taj Mahal and Varanasi on the same trip?
Yes, but not in three or four days. They’re at opposite ends of Uttar Pradesh, about seven hours apart on the fastest direct train. The workable version is 6–8 nights: fly into Delhi for Agra and Mathura, take the direct train east, and fly home from Varanasi.
Is the Taj Mahal open every day?
No. The Taj Mahal is closed to visitors every Friday, without exception, for prayers at the mosque inside the complex. It’s open all other days, from roughly half an hour before sunrise to half an hour before sunset so opening times shift through the year rather than being fixed.
How much does it cost to enter the Taj Mahal?
Indian citizens pay a modest complex-entry fee, with an additional charge per adult to enter the main mausoleum chamber itself the part most people actually want to see. Children under 15 enter free. Confirm current rates with us when booking, as monument fees are revised periodically.
Do I need to book darshan in advance at Ayodhya?
Strongly recommended. General darshan at the Ram Mandir doesn’t require a booking, but queues can run several hours. The free Sugam Darshan pass and the free aarti passes are booked in advance through the temple trust’s official portal, typically opening around 15 days ahead, with an ID required and a limit per mobile number.
Is there a paid VIP darshan at Ayodhya?
No. Every form of access at the Ram Mandir general darshan, Sugam Darshan and aarti passes is completely free. Anyone charging you for Ayodhya darshan is selling something the temple does not offer. We book the free passes for you as part of your package.
Does Sugam Darshan at Kashi Vishwanath cost money?
Yes, unlike Ayodhya, Kashi Vishwanath’s Sugam Darshan is an official paid ticket, and the aartis are separately ticketed, with the pre-dawn Mangala Aarti costing more than the others. All of it is booked through the temple’s own portal. Be aware that touts outside the temple quote far higher prices for the same thing, or for access that doesn’t exist.
What is the best time to visit Uttar Pradesh?
October to March. February and March are arguably the best of it clear, comfortable, and without the fog risk. December and January are beautiful but bring dense fog that can delay flights and trains, so allow buffer in your connections. April to June is severely hot and best avoided.
Are there direct flights from Bangalore to Varanasi?
Yes, multiple carriers fly nonstop from Bengaluru to Varanasi daily, taking around two and a half hours. There’s also daily nonstop service from Bengaluru to Lucknow, and direct flights to both cities from Hyderabad and Chennai.
How do I get to the Taj Mahal from South India?
Fly to Delhi, then travel on to Agra about 2 to 3 hours by train, with several fast morning services, or by road on the Yamuna Expressway. Agra has no meaningful scheduled commercial air service, so Taj Mahal trips are planned around Delhi.
Is there a Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj this year?
Almost certainly not. The Maha Kumbh concluded in February 2025 and the next Kumbh Melas, in 2027, are at Haridwar and Nashik outside Uttar Pradesh. What Prayagraj holds every year is the Magh Mela at the Sangam, from roughly mid-January to late February.
Is Uttar Pradesh suitable for elderly parents?
Very much so a large share of our travellers are on exactly this kind of trip. It needs the right pacing and the right slot bookings: early-morning darshan windows, hotels positioned to minimise walking, and an itinerary that doesn’t try to cover both ends of the state in a week. Tell us who’s travelling and we’ll build it accordingly.
What should I wear at the temples?
Modest dress shoulders and knees covered, for men and women. Shoes come off well before the entrance at most temples. Mobile phones, bags, cameras and leather items are not permitted inside Kashi Vishwanath or the Ram Mandir, so travel light on darshan mornings.
Planning an Uttar Pradesh trip?
Tell us your city, your dates, who’s travelling and what matters most the Ganges, the Ram Mandir, the Taj Mahal, or all of it. We’ll send back a costed itinerary with real flight times from your airport, darshan passes already booked through the official portals, and an honest view of what your days will actually allow.
