Chennai flies non-stop to Bagdogra once a day on IndiGo and once on Air India Express, each in about 2 h 50 m, and Gangtok is 4 to 5 hours on by road. Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake reopened to tourists in March 2026 after the 2023 flood damage, but the road and its single-lane bridge are still fragile and North Sikkim permits can be suspended at short notice, so build a spare day into any North Sikkim plan.

When should Chennai travellers go to Sikkim?
October to mid-December for clear mountain views and dry roads, or March to May for rhododendrons and a break from Chennai's summer heat; April fares from Chennai are among the year's highest, so book early. Avoid June to September for landslides. Indians need a permit for Tsomgo, Nathula, Lachung, Lachen and Gurudongmar; Nathula is open only from Wednesday to Sunday.
