Puri's Jagannath Temple is one of Hinduism's four classical Char Dham sites and the spiritual centre of nearly every Odisha itinerary but its entry rules are strict, long-standing, and apply without exception. We'd rather tell you this clearly upfront than have you discover it at the temple gate.

Who can enter

● Only Hindus may enter the temple's inner sanctum a rule displayed at the Lion's Gate entrance in five languages, and enforced without exception, including for foreign heads of state and ambassadors in the past.

● Indian Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists are permitted entry; non-Indian nationals of any faith, and non-Hindu Indian citizens, are not.

● If your group includes a non-Hindu or foreign member, the temple can still be appreciated from outside the Raghunandan Library rooftop and the Emar Mutt terrace both offer clear views of the temple's 65-metre shikhara (spire) without restriction. Dress code and what to bring

● Wear traditional attire: sarees or salwar-kameez for women, dhoti-kurta or kurta-pyjama for men. Shorts, sleeveless tops and ripped or torn jeans are discouraged and can affect entry.

A new queue system, since January 2026

Since 1 January 2026, the temple has operated a new "Dhadi Darshan" queue-management system, with devotees entering and exiting through separate designated gates to reduce congestion. Best time to visit Odisha

A note on cyclone season

Odisha's coast has a documented, repeated history of significant cyclone landfalls specifically in late October and early-to-mid November including some of the most severe storms in the region's recorded history. This doesn't mean avoiding early-October travel; most years pass without disruption. It does mean building some flexibility into an early-October or November booking, and checking regional weather advisories in the days before you travel, rather than assuming the "October–March ideal season" framing is uniformly risk-free at its very start.

Is there a wildlife or tiger-reserve option in Odisha?
